Nature, role and task of the course
Selected Readings from Foreign Economic Journals is a long-established course for English majors in SIFT, which aims at improving students’ ability in reading business English articles. It was intended for the third-year business English undergraduates, but now is available for students majoring in translation. Students attend the course once a week (2 academic periods each). After two semesters, students are expected to be able to read articles in foreign economic journals without much difficulty, grasp the main ideas and collect essential information.
Syllabus and objectives:
The textbook selects articles on economic and trade issues from English-language journals as well as chapters from works on economics and trade published in English-speaking countries. The course intends to help students to get well acquainted with the style, syntax of articles from foreign journals and enlarge their vocabularies through reading, explanation, and discussion. Moreover, they are also expected to know better about the background information on international economics and trade. The end-purpose of the course is to help students to improve their ability in reading foreign journals, grasp the main idea, and detailed information in relevant fields.
